Fighting Holiday Hunger
Action Homeless tackles holiday hunger in city-wide partnership.
Action Homeless staff and volunteers have been working hard over the summer holidays to help feed children across Leicester.
Over the last three years, Leicester City Council has run a Holiday Hunger programme to ensure that children who rely on school meals don’t go hungry. This year Action Homeless worked alongside the Council, national charity Feeding Britain, and food wholesaler Brakes to feed thousands of children over the six week summer holiday.
Action Homeless was responsible for making and delivering an average of 194 packed lunches a day across the 30 day period, with a total of 5820 lunches being made in our kitchen! These were then delivered to community groups around Leicester by our Action Trust van. Ensuring children received a nutritious meal when they would otherwise go without.
This success would not have been possible without the support of our hardworking volunteers. The programme presented an opportunity for Action Homeless service users to volunteer daily by leading the kitchen team They were supported by British Gas, who kindly supplied over 30 volunteers towards the project. In all, a total of 270 volunteer hours were completed by over 40 volunteers.
Community Support Manager, Tim Adkin said “six weeks of hard work has paid off. No child should have to go hungry and we are proud to have been a part of such an impactful project.”
