Helping those affected by homelessness to achieve independence
Action Homeless is the largest charity committed to supporting the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Leicester and Leicestershire. We strive to offer sustainable and permanent solutions for the homeless and for those at risk of homelessness, with the long-term aim of preventing it altogether.
Our approach goes beyond providing a roof. Our expert team of staff and volunteers work hard to ensure people leave Action Homeless with somewhere to call home and with the means to maintain this independence.
New projects of 2016
Action on empty homes
Over the past 2 years, Action Homeless has renovated 7 empty properties providing essential housing for families and individuals. Action Homeless was also fortunate to receive a £140,000 grant from the Nationwide Foundation in support of the project. The grant comes as a major boost for the charity, who have already renovated 20 empty properties in Leicester, creating homes for 56 individuals and families since 2012.
No Second Night Out
No Second Night Out (NSNO) Leicestershire is a partnership project led by Action Homeless, which provides a coordinated response to rough sleeping within the city and county. The project offers crisis accommodation for rough sleepers and a signposting service. Between September 2015 and November 2016 NSNO Leicestershire has helped 102 rough sleepers in the county and city.
Action Trust is a social enterprise providing professional cleaning and gardening services. The social enterprise offers supervised training and work placements to people who have experienced homelessness and are long-term unemployed. Action Trust currently employs 4 individuals whilst also offering 6 -12 week work placements to our residents, giving them the skills and independence to move into future employment and break the cycle of homelessness. Thanks to a grant from the Pret Foundation Trust, Action Trust has acquired a new van allowing the social enterprise to offer even more placements!
Moneywise was launched across Leicester and Leicestershire to support unemployed individuals with money handling, budgeting and digital confidence. The programme worked to prepare these individuals for work through training and education and has supported 1400 people. Thanks to a £1.9 million funding award from the European Social Fund and the Big Lottery, Moneywise Plus has been launched and will expand upon the previous Moneywise project. For more information please visit the Moneywise Plus website www.moneywiseplus.co.uk or call us on 0116 2211888.

The Stop relies on surplus food donations from surrounding retailers as well as donations from the public. It is open every weekday from 1.00pm – 4.30pm. If you would like to make a donation please call 07751 732 434 or 0116 2211851.

Jane’s* Story (not pictured): I’ve lived at Norfolk Street for almost a year (one of Action Homeless’ ‘Empty Homes’ properties). It feels just like home as soon as I walk through the door. My room is on the ground floor, right at the front. Everything I need is on the same floor; my room, the living room, the kitchen, and my own bathroom! I receive support with my finances from my Housing Support Officer and I know that I always have a friendly face to talk to! (*name has been changed)
